Planting More Street Trees Isn’t the Answer to Climate Change

The answer is to plant the right tree, plant it correctly and maintain it.  A study published in Science Daily proves this point.  It found that our street trees live fast and die young. The research shows, that urban trees (in comparison to their rural counterparts), experience (4x) accelerated growth and double the mortality rates. All of this means that we are experiencing a net loss in carbon storage, over time. According to the study, “The findings suggest that planting initiatives alone may not be sufficient to maintain or enhance canopy cover and biomass due to the unique demographics of urban ecosystems.”  Click here to read more.
