Last December we noticed a barn owl had taken up residence in one of the owl boxes in the Lake Herman Open Space. The barn owl is still there because the vole litter below the box has expanded greatly when we checked last month. The winter rains created ideal conditions for the voles to reproduce, much to the delight of the barn owl. When you see an owl box around town, check below it for scat, then you know it has been occupied.
