WHEREAS, in 1872, J. Sterling Morton proposed to the
Nebraska Board of Agriculture that a special day be set aside for the
planting of trees; and
WHEREAS, the holiday called Arbor Day was first observed
with the planting of more than a million trees in Nebraska; and
WHEREAS, Arbor Day is now observed at various times of the
year throughout the nation and the world; and
WHEREAS, trees can reduce the erosion of our precious topsoil
due to wind and water, cut heating and cooling costs, moderate
the temperature, clean the air, produce life-giving oxygen, reduce
greenhouse gas emissions, and provide for wildlife; and
WHEREAS, trees are a renewable resource giving us paper
products and wood for homes and businesses; and
WHEREAS, trees beautify our community, increase property
values, enhance the economic vitality of the business areas; and
WHEREAS, trees, where properly planted, are a source of joy
and spiritual renewal.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT I, Elizabeth
Patterson, Mayor, on behalf of the City of Benicia, do hereby proclaim
the week beginning Sunday, October 9 through Saturday, October 15,
Benicia Arbor Week and Saturday, October 15, 2011 Benicia Arbor
Day.
