The city’s Arbor Day Celebration returns Saturday with more than twice the number of vendors than last year’s event, organizers said.
The third-annual free event is packed with activities meant to spur interest in supporting trees.
To drum up interest, organizers for the second year will award iPads to students who competed in a citywide art and science contest.
This year’s celebration will feature a native plant sale, organic food, music, educational presentations, awards, puppetry and more, said Wolfram Alderson, director of the Benicia Tree Foundation.
A special new “Benicia Tree-Keeper” Girl Scouts patch will be unveiled at the event, acknowledging the Scouts’ efforts in the city’s tree-planting efforts, Alderson said.
Jessica Walsh-Krenicki, president of the nonprofit foundation’s board, said, “What we are ultimately concerned about is bringing people together to take positive environmental actions — and trees are superb vehicles for making this happen.”
In conjunction with the Arbor Day celebration, a citywide tree art and science challenge was offered to fifth- through 12th-graders in Benicia.
The winners will be announced during the event and awarded iPads. Further, the winners’ schools will be awarded plaques honoring those students.
Alderson reported that “over 100 trees” have been planted during the past year.
