Members from Benicia High’s Key Club volunteered for the Tree Care Day on October 18 at the Benicia Tree Foundation’s Adopt-a-Highway project located on the Columbus Parkway eastbound offramp from I-780. The volunteers weeded and mulched all twenty-six trees planted there in the past two years.
Over three yards of mulch were used on the trees, which are now prepared for the rains that hopefully will come this winter. Mulch helps retain the soil moisture and reduce weed growth.
The trees were watered in June and July and still looked good after the end of summer. If we get average rainfall this winter the trees won’t need any supplemental irrigation next summer.

Key Club volunteers used hand tools for weeding and mulching.
